22News spoke with Massachusetts business owners whose business could be affected by the lack of a sales tax free weekend.
The state says while they lose money on the sales tax, the tax holidays spurs spending.
Starting August 4 at 12:01 a.m. qualifying items will be exempt from sales tax. The tax free holiday ends August 6 at 11:59 p.m.
It’s summer which means it’s a good time for beach vacations, barbecues with family and friends, and even a better time for some back to school shopping. A dozen U.S. states are hosting a tax-free holiday weekend starting Friday, giving shoppers incentives to spend more. The 12 states participating in the tax break this weekend include Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. In two other states, Maryland and Connecticut, the shopping spree is scheduled to last for a whole week starting next week and the week after that, respectively. For the first time since it started 7 years ago, Metro Schools start a new year before the state's sales tax holiday. That means Davidson County families who want their children prepared from day one will have to spend more on back to school supplies. Big box retailers like Target are banking on back to school, but pencils and notebooks at the White Bridge Road store aren't exactly flying off the shelves.
